2008-2009 Team Accomplishments:
Last year, in its second year of existence, Santa Monica Surf Volleyball Club finished 8th overall in the 16's division for the Southern California region, and qualified outright for the open division at the Junior Olympics. Juggling injuries, conflicting schedules (for our multi-sport athletes), as well as various setting systems, our hard-charging squad wound up one missed call from a gold division finish in Atlanta. Congratulations to all that were involved! And congratulations to those of our players starting to be contacted by college recruiters. Deserved.
Santa Monica Surf Volleyball is coached by US and collegiate national championship player and coach, Denny Cline, assisted by UCLA Bruin great, Dave Mochalski.
Santa Monica Surf VB was founded in 2007, by Denny Cline. Coach Cline started on 3 national championship teams at UCLA, played on the U.S. national team, coached 4 national championships at UCLA (as well as 3 runners-up), coached club league and national championships at UC Berkeley, serves as commissioner of the Southern California Collegiate Volleyball League and is in the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. He co-coached the national championship 14's boys team MB Surf, in 2007. (SM Surf is (now very) loosely affiliated with MB Surf.)
Assistant coach Dave Mochalski starred for UCLA's undefeated national championship team in 1982, owns the Bruins' all-time single match blocking record, played professionally in Europe for years, played on the U.S. junior national team, coaches volleyball and basketball, has one son playing D1 vball, another on his way, and is, besides, just an all-round great guy.
SM Surf practices twice per week at Santa Monica High School .
